Caboolture South local and dad of two, Ryan, decided six years behind a desk was enough when he applied for his mature-age apprenticeship.

Trade apprenticeships are one of a variety of career pathways at Unitywater, including programs designed for current students and recent university graduates.

Unitywater Executive Manager Strategic Engagement Joshua Zugajev said there were five team members completing their Certificate III with the organisation, which takes place over a four-year period with one month of each year dedicated to TAFE studies.

“Supporting the next generation of mechanical electricians, mechanical fitters, and other skilled tradespeople is vital as our infrastructure grows and evolves to meet the needs of our rapidly growing service region,” Mr Zugajev said.

Ryan, who has been with the water utility for nine months, said after spending ten years in office-based roles, it was time to change it up and look for an opportunity with a more practical side.

“I haven’t looked back since I started in April last year – it’s been a great way to continue using my brain and put my hands to use as well, and a bonus to be doing this in such a supportive environment,” Ryan said.

“When I’m not spending time with the kids, I love playing a round of golf, which is a handy 10 minutes down the road from the Unitywater workshop in Morayfield where we wrap up each day.”

Recent Year 12 Graduate from St Eugene College Burpengary, Travis, joined the water utility in November.

He was interested in finding a paid apprenticeship where he could give back to the community he lives and works in.

“I was uncertain about what to expect but have been surprised to find out how much goes into maintaining the water and wastewater in our area – my mentors have taught me a lot about the role electricians play within the water industry,”  he said.

“It’s been incredible to see how much actually goes on behind the scenes, and the early start and finish times have been a bonus, giving me the chance to squeeze in a round of golf in the afternoons!”
