Acknowledgement of Country

Unitywater acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we operate – the Kabi Kabi, Jinibara, and Turrbal peoples.

We recognise their significant contributions to the conservation of our environment and their deep connection to the land and waters.

We pay our respects to their Elders, past and present, and acknowledge the important role all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples continue to play within our communities.

Our vision for reconciliation

Unitywater’s vision is to honour and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as Australia’s First Nations through collaborative partnerships, integrating their knowledge, empowering First Nations communities, and increasing their cultural capabilities.

We are committed to creating a more reconciled Australia and aim to make a meaningful impact to the lives of First Nations peoples by partnering with organisations and community members to:

  • Empower First Nations communities with opportunities to strengthen their skills and abilities to work on Country and deliver collective outcomes for major initiatives - such as infrastructure or sustainability programs
  • Create opportunities for First Nations peoples to develop their capabilities to safeguard critical environmental areas, implement offsets, protect habitats, and enhance water quality.
  • Shape both economic and environmentally sustainable outcomes to better serve the customer of the future.
  • Develop and implement strategies to increase employment opportunities for First Nations individuals, emphasising professional growth to nurture their long-term careers.

Our third Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), Innovate II RAP, was officially endorsed by Reconciliation Australia in early 2024. It follows the completion of our Innovate RAP, endorsed in 2020, and our first Reflect RAP in 2019. This our formal commitment to advancing reconciliation, both internally and within the communities we serve.

Our responsibility

We have a social and economic responsibility to the community in which we operate. Through this commitment we aim to:

  • Build respect and trusting relationships by communicating openly with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples including Traditional Custodians, individuals, community groups and businesses
  • Increase diversity in our organisation by providing employment opportunities and promoting work experience through our career pathway programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • Increase Cultural competency to provide a safe and inclusive work environment by raising awareness and knowledge, deepening respect and understanding, and celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures
  • Make a positive contribution to the health and wellbeing of remote Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander communities through the provision of technical support and mentoring for improved water and sewerage services
  • Explore opportunities through our procurement team for increasing the accessibility of our service contracts to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses.
