World Toilet Day is a global opportunity to appreciate the simple but important role toilets play in safe sanitation and public health.
Unitywater Executive Manager Customer Delivery Rhett Duncan said it was easy to forget about the water you use once it flows down the sink or is flushed away.
“Wastewater services and treatment are essential for public health and our local environment and waterways,” Mr Duncan said..
“Our services are essential for a healthy life. We provide clean, safe, reliable drinking water to our customers’ taps and we take away used water from sinks, showers, washing machines and toilets, putting it through a rigorous treatment process before safely releasing it to our local creeks and rivers, as part of the urban water cycle.
“To ensure we’re protecting our environment as much as possible, and to prevent blockages and overflows in the wastewater network, we’re reminding our communities to only flush the Three Ps (pee, poo and toilet paper) and throw everything else in the bin.
“Unitywater has 17 wastewater treatment plants across Moreton Bay, Noosa and the Sunshine Coast which treated wastewater under conditions issued by the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation (DESI).
“We also produce biosolids, the nutrient-rich material created from treating wastewater solids. They’re a rich source of phosphorus and nitrogen, which can be used in agriculture, composting and land rehabilitation.
“Each year, we treat about 68,000 million litres of wastewater from our communities in Moreton Bay, the Sunshine Coast and Noosa. It’s an enormous volume that is only growing with our expanding communities as we work to provide services to one of Australia’s fastest-growing regions.”
