Today the Yandina Creek Wetland is a living laboratory with more than 100 species of wildlife and abundant flora - a testament to Unitywater’s commitment to preserving water resources and promoting sustainable practices within the community.
Unitywater Acting Executive Manager Sustainable Infrastructure Solutions Ivan Beirne said the utility operates in one of Australia’s most exceptional environments in terms of natural beauty, and a diverse geographic and demographic landscape, serving one of the fastest growing regions in the country.
“As part of National Water Week, with the theme ‘United by Water’, we invite members of the community to join our Environmental Sustainability team for a walking tour of the Yandina Creek Wetland,” Mr Beirne said.
“It also coincides with the launch of our Environmental Sustainability Plan this week,” he said.
“Whilst the site is always open for the community to enjoy, guided tours provide a deeper insight to the project and how it contributes to Unitywater’s sustainability solutions across our water and sewerage networks, treatment plants, facilities and fleet as we strive to meet our net zero target by 2040,” he said.
“Unitywater’s commitment to net zero includes an ambitious goal of ensuring all nutrients from wastewater are diverted or offset from waterways by 2040,” Mr Beirne said.
“By looking for ways to reduce our operating footprint and support the natural environment to beneficially reuse water, Unitywater is committed to sustainability while enhancing water and wastewater services for our local communities.
“The wetland acts as a natural filter and removes about 5.3 tonnes of total nitrogen from the Maroochy River every year,” he said.
“Unitywater is committed to maintaining the natural state of the wetland and working with neighbours and other stakeholders for many years to come.”
